Are those nerves creeping in as to exactly what questions will be asked?
Here are our 5 top tips to help you on your way.
- You must convince a prospective employer that you are interested in the industry. Preparation is key! Do your homework and learn all you can about the company and the prospective job role.
- The company will do their due diligence looking at your LinkedIn profile (and perhaps your Facebook page too!) to really get a feel of the person you are so take care not to engage in anything that might jeopardise your chances, for example, extreme political opinions etc, unless of course you are applying for the post of Prime Minister!
- If you are unsure as to how to dress for the interview, then head to the company premises around lunchtime as the employees head out for a sandwich and some fresh air. Look at the dress code and the image the employees are projecting for some great hints as to what might be appropriate, but we would always advise you to lean towards a more formal business dress code.
- You can almost guarantee the following question will be asked: ‘Would you say you have any weaknesses?’. The answer is not ‘I don’t think so’! Prepare an answer for this question that has a weakness (a perfectionist, perhaps) appear to be a strength.
- First impressions are critical. Ensure you are well-groomed, have a smile on your face, use appropriate eye contact with your interviewer/s, offer a firm but not a knuckle-crunching handshake, display positive body language signals and, very importantly, be yourself. They are not looking for clones!
